The Marketing Leverage Index.
What the transformation gained you, in one number. Three components, each measured before and after: capacity, skills, and budget flexibility.
Whether the operating-model shift paid off, and where. A function can move up the maturity ladder and still gain little leverage, or gain capacity without freeing any budget. The Index separates the three gains so you can see which one is lagging.
- “What did the transformation actually buy us?”
- The quarterly business review after a stage move
- Before and after a 90-day Foundation Sprint
Three gains, one index.
Capacity
How much more work does each dollar buy?
Effective execution capacity per dollar, after divided by before. The book’s benchmark: “The lean model delivers 2.2 times the effective capacity at 69% of the cost.” (p. 123)
Skills
How many capabilities can you put to work without hiring?
Distinct capabilities you can activate within 30 days without a new hire, after divided by before. The Stage 3 bar: “Strategic partner ecosystem covers roughly 90 percent of execution needs.” (p. 451)
Budget flexibility
How much of the budget can you actually move?
Flexible budget as a share of the total, after divided by before. Flexible budget is the total, minus locked costs (personnel and technology), minus committed program spend (pp. 460–461).
The Index is the geometric mean of the three ratios. 1.0 means no gain; 2.0 means capacity, skills, and flexibility are working twice as hard, on average. One weak component pulls the Index down more than a simple average would, and that is deliberate: leverage needs all three.
